If you love watching historical drama shows mixed with romance, then better watch Reigns. It is a romantic drama TV series based on a historical theme. The creation of this television series project is done by Stephanie SenGupta and Laurie McCarthy. The show streams on the CW network.
The story is set in an ancient 16th century revolving around a Queen of Scots, Mary, and how she gains authority in a French court. The role of Mary is played by the actress, Adelaide Kane. The first premiere of Reign took place in 2013 on 17th October and ended in 2017 on 16th June. Till now out of five four of the seasons of this show have streamed already.
Now, the wait is for the new installment i.e season 5. The production of Reign is done by CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television in partnership with Whizbang Films, Take 5 productions, and Joyful Girl Productions. Long ago in 2013 February, came a demand from the CW network regarding a pilot project that would be based upon the life of Mary Stuart.
The network wanted the storyline to be fictionalized instead of exact historical facts. And so the casting of Adelaide Kane for the mainstream role took place in the same month (February). Most of the prime filming of the series has been done in Toronto. Another place for Filmation is the Republic of Ireland.
Ever since Reign hit the screens for the first time, critics have reviewed it from both positive and negative sides. They praised the series for the beautiful costumes but did not like the flaws in the facts of history. So far, four seasons of Reign have been screened. Now viewers who have liked the series from the beginning are inquisitive for the new installment of the Reign series. Story plot
Season 1 of Reigns begins with the era of 1557 when Mary was living in France. Very soon, she comes back to the castle, and there her marriage is awaited to Prince Francis. Their engagement had already taken place at the age of 6 years. Now witnessing the change in the air of power and politics, Mary has to struggle for this.
Besides this, she also has to think about her growing emotions towards Prince Francis and also the ill intentions of Bash, the bastard half-brother of Francis. Believing in the prediction of Nostradamus, Catherine, the mother of Francis makes all possible attempts in not letting the marriage of her son and Mary solemnize.
She does this all because of a belief that the marriage of her son will bring doom and will lead to his early demise. Apart from Mary, the focus is also put upon her Scottish handmaidens Lola, Kenna, Greer, and Aylee based upon the Four Marys. They are shown searching for themselves about their future life partners at the French Court.
In the second season of Reign, King Henry II passes away leading to the crowning of Francis and Mary as new king and queen of Scotland. Now both the monarchs have to experience balancing their marriage with the tasks. Also, they have to manage the uprising conflicts between the two religious groups – Protestants and Catholics.
Besides these, Mary and Francis have to remain alert about the evil motive of the House of Bourbon who have their eyes on the throne of France. And in the following 3rd season, the health of Prince Francis starts deteriorating followed by his later death. And this is how the prediction of Nostradamus comes true, as feared by his mother.
Charles becomes the new under-age king of France
After the death of Francis, his brother Charles is made the new king who is too young to hold such a big responsibility. Catherine, the mother of her deceased son Francis and newly appointed king Charles, takes the charge as regent. The third season also showcases the introduction of England’s Queen Elizabeth court. She is the one who makes a plot against the young queen Mary, and takes on the marital prospects on oneself, and deals with Robert Dudley, a man with whom she has an affair secretly.
Queen Mary returns to Scotland
Now comes the fourth season of Reign. This season shows the return of Queen Mary to Scotland. She has to deal with challenging tasks including management of people on her side, including James the bastard half-brother of Francis and Lord Bothwell, known for his outspokenness. Besides this, Queen Mary also has to face a complex task which is keeping tabs on her foes, like John Knox, the preacher of the Protestant faith.
Tensions brewed between Mary and her cousin Elizabeth 1 following Mary’s marriage with an English Catholic, Lord Darnley. He intends to usurp the throne and become the owner of England. After the death of Francis, now his mother Catherine is worried about her son King Charles IX from the intentions of Queen Leeza and Henry of Spain.

When to expect Reign season 4?
The last fourth season of Reign came in 2017 on June 16. Now, there has been a long hiatus, since we have been watching the pretty Scotland queen Mary and her adventures. Viewers who have loved this historical drama series must be curious to expect the new 5th season. But we feel sorry to bear the bad news that it is not going to happen, as network CW has canceled it. There is no renewal of the series taking place further.
