    Who is Muhammad Ali?

American activist and professional boxer Muhammad Ali was also known as “The Greatest” and was usually cited as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He is recognized as one of the most important sports figures of the 20th century.

Early Life and Rise to Fame

He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and started his amateur boxing training at the age of 12. He achieved international fame later that year after winning the light heavyweight gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics at the age of 18. After 1961, he converted to Islam. On February 25, 1964, at the age of 22, he defeated Sonny Liston to win the heavyweight world title.

    Educational Details

He finished his primary education at Louisville, Kentucky’s Central High School. He never applied to any of the colleges himself. He was particularly interested in sports and boxing from the beginning of his life. He usually spent his time training and boxing.

    Cause of Death

He announced his diagnosis of Parkinson’s syndrome in 1984, though he and his doctors denied this. It was shocking to learn that his official cause of death was “septic shock owing to undetermined natural causes,” as he had been battling Parkinson’s disease for over three decades.

    Professional Career

On October 29, 1960, Ali made his professional debut by defeating Tunney Hunsaker in a six-round decision. From that point until the end of 1963, he compiled a 19-0 record with 15 knockout victories. Tony Esperti, Jim Robinson, Donnie Fleeman, Alonzo Johnson, George Logan, Willi Besmanoff, LaMar Clark, Doug Jones, and Henry Cooper were among the boxers he defeated. In a 1962 fight, he also prevailed over experienced fighter and former trainer Archie Moore.

Muhammad Ali’s Relationship with Aisha Fletcher

Ali started an extramarital relationship with 16-year-old Wanda Bolton in 1974 when he was 32. She later changed her name to Aaisha Ali, with whom he had a daughter named Khaliah. Ali wed Aaisha in an unconstitutional Islamic ceremony while still married to Belinda Boyd. Aaisha sued Ali for unpaid palimony in January 1985. The dispute was resolved when Ali agreed to create a $200,000 trust fund for Khaliah.

    Conversion to Islam

When Ali competed in the Golden Gloves competition in Chicago in 1959, he claimed to have learned about the Nation of Islam for the first time. In 1961, he went to his first Nation of Islam session. He persisted in going to meetings while concealing his participation from the general public.  Following his victory over Liston in 1964, the Nation of Islam became more accepting and consented to make his membership known. He converted to Islam formally in 1961.
