It’s not always easy to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat from different areas of the body. Those fat pockets can prevent you from achieving your desired body shape. It’s a reason why many people have liposuction. Many people get this cosmetic surgery in Turkey because of the lower cost. Before having liposuction, you may hear many myths about the procedure. So, it’s a good idea to know whether or not they’re true.

Myth: Liposuction Will Help You Lose Weight
Keep in mind that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Before you have the surgery, you need to be at your ideal weight. So, you get liposuction after you’ve lost weight, not through it. You can lose weight either through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery. However, you won’t lose more than 2-3 pounds of fat through liposuction. That is why it’s important to discuss your treatment goals with your surgeon beforehand.
Myth: Fat Removed Through Liposuction Will Come Back
In liposuction, the surgeon makes an incision in the target area and vacuums out the fat cells from that area. This fat is removed from the body so it cannot regrow. Therefore, the results of liposuction are permanent.
The fat that has been removed through this procedure will not grow back. However, you still need to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. That’s because some of the fat cells remain in the body, and they can grow in size and change the contour of your body again.
Myth: Only Women Can Get Liposuction
Both men and women can get liposuction. According to a 2020 survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, liposuction was the second most common plastic surgery procedure in both men and women. However, compared to more than 1.5 million who had this surgery, almost 225,000 men had it. So, although not as many men undergo liposuction, it’s still a popular procedure among them. It’s also possible to have 6-pack abs through liposuction.
Myth: Liposuction Will Help You Get Rid of Loose Skin
Liposuction is the suction of lipids (fat). It’s not a skin tightening procedure. So, you need to get other lifting and tucking procedures to get rid of the excess skin. Many people combine liposuction with other skin tightening surgeries like a tummy tuck. If your skin has lost elasticity, it may sag after the fat is removed, and you won’t be able to enjoy the results of the procedure because of the skin folds. That’s why you should make sure to clarify with your surgeon whether or not you’ll need additional surgeries.
Myth: Liposuction Can Remove Cellulite
On the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks, cellulite is visible as a dimpling of the skin. While it’s not exactly known what causes cellulite, what we know is that fat is involved. And that has led to the myth that liposuction can help remove cellulite once the fat pushing against the skin is removed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.
There are fibrous cords that connect the skin with the underlying muscle (which causes dimpling). Even if the fat is removed through liposuction, the cords stay in place. So, keep in mind that liposuction will not help you get rid of cellulite.
Myth: Liposuction Leaves The Skin Lumpy
It’s true that you can end up with lumps and bumps underneath your skin after liposuction. However, it’s a temporary side effect of the surgery that goes away on its own after a few months. It is normal and nothing to worry about. All you need to do is to make sure that you’re wearing the compression garment as instructed by your surgeon. It helps prevent the build-up of fluid, which is why you need to wear it.
Myth: Only Young People Can Get Liposuction
It is possible for a healthy person to undergo liposuction at any age (after they’re 18 years old). One reason why this surgery is contraindicated in older adults is that skin elasticity can be a problem. The skin won’t snap back to the new contours once the fat is removed. However, you should discuss with your doctor if it’s possible to get your desired results by combining liposuction with a skin-tightening procedure.
Myth: Liposuction Is Unsafe
Every surgery carries certain risks. Liposuction is also a surgical procedure, so it carries the risk of certain post-complications like bleeding and infection. However, in general, liposuction is a safe procedure as long as it’s done by a licensed, board-certified surgeon. Make sure to ask for the credentials of your surgeon before booking the procedure.
