Roman’s wife Malinina was born in Russia in January 1973 to parents who loved sports. Her mother was a gymnast, while her father was a skater. When Malinina was a teenager, her family relocated to Uzbek, where she grew up until 1996, when she returned to Russia.

She graduated from the Siberian Academy of Physical Culture and relocated to Dale City, Virginia, in 1998. Malinia remains famous for competing in several competitive Olympics, where she finished 8th position overall.

Malinina and Skorniakov were trained by the same trainer whom they met. In 1999, their coach died abruptly, forcing them to train themselves for the 2000 World Championship.
