Marianna Paulette Howard’s Family
Marianna Paulette Howard was born on 1 October 1956 to the American Actress Gloria Grahame and American Producer and Director, Cy Howard. Grahame was a Los Angeles native and was brought up as a Methodist. Her Scottish mother, Jean McDougall, who went by the stage name Jean Grahame, was a British stage actor and acting instructor. Her father was an Englishman, Reginald Michael Bloxam Hallward who was an architect and author. Joy Hallward, an actress who wed John Mitchum, was the eldest sister of Gloria. Gloria’s mother gave her acting lessons throughout her youth and adolescence.
Grahame went to Hollywood High School before quitting to become an actor. Grahame made her stage debut in Nunnally Johnson’s The World’s Full of Girls, an adaptation of novel Till I Come Back to You, Louis B. Mayer witnessed her performance and signed her to an agreement with MGM Studios under her given name.
Gloria was married twice before marrying Marianna’s father, Cy Howard in 1954. Her previous marriages were to actor Stanley Clements and director Nicholas Ray. She had a son with Nichloas but things didn’t work between them after which she married Cy Howard. Eventually Howard and Gloria got divorce after 3 years of marriage. Her 4th husband was her step son and ex-husband Nichlos Ray’s son Anthony Ray. The marriage was kept a secret until 1962, when it was reported in the newspapers. The scandal that followed hurt Grahame’s reputation and had an impact on her career.

Marianna Paulette Howard’s mother, Gloria Grahamne first got custody of Marianna but when she got involved with her stepson, Anthony Ray, a scandal surrounded her. Due to her impropriety, and marriage to her stepson, Cy Howard made an effort to obtain exclusive custody of the couple’s daughter Marianna. For years, Howard and Grahame fought over Marianna’s custody because Howard believed Grahame was an irresponsible mother. Grahame suffered a nervous collapse as a consequence of the anxiety of the controversy, the decline of her career, and her battle for custody with Howard. Later, in 1964, she received electroshock therapy.

Grahame had a breast cancer diagnosis in March 1974. She sought homoeopathic treatments in addition to receiving radiation therapy, altering her diet, quitting smoking, and abstaining from alcohol. The malignancy in remission was reduced within a year. In 1980, Grahame’s cancer reappeared, but she chose not to accept her diagnosis or get radiation therapy. Grahame continued to work in theatre shows in the UK and the US despite her deteriorating health. However, once she was brought to Manhattan, she took her last breath at the age of 57.
