We all know we need to exercise more, sit less, and get a daily dose of the sun to be at our best. Starting a sport or at the gym can be immensely intimidating. Did you know, however, that more US citizens are hiking for fun and exercise than ever before? Not only are you out in the great outdoors, but you’re also exercising, strengthening your body, and having fun. Hiking can help you with depression, encourage you to unwind and relax, and even help you bond with your family. Coupled with those beautiful views, this growing sport has plenty to love. Let’s take a look!
Getting Ready for a Hike
Tempting as it is, however, you can’t simply leap off the couch and head out the door! Since hiking is fun and rewarding, it’s easy to overestimate your current fitness levels and capabilities.
Luckily, there are very few requirements for a happy and productive hike. What matters the most?
- Comfortable shoes: Preferably something sturdy and suited to uneven terrain – a good boot or hiking shoe is your best bet. These can help protect your ankles, support your feet and arches, and ward off blisters. A high-quality sneaker may get you through your first easy trails, but it’s worth investing in great shoes if you enjoy the sport. Add thick socks to the mix for blister prevention, comfort, and avoiding insect bites.
- Tech Essentials: You’re going out to unwind, but you’ll still need some tech. Your phone will help you in an emergency (and take great pics, too). Some other tech necessities to consider include backup power banks and essential tools.
- Sturdy, Practical Clothes: this will vary depending on your location and activity. You want lightweight, breathable, and sturdy clothing you can easily take off if needed. Remember that the weather can turn fast on the trails, so a light jacket is always a smart idea. You should avoid denim for the same reason – while it’s robust, it also holds water and can quickly lead to hyperthermia if something goes wrong. To prevent sunburn, a cap or visor and plenty of sunblock are a must.
- Snacks and Drinks: Obviously, this will depend on whether you’re packing for a 3-day hike or a morning on the trails. However, staying hydrated is a priority in any exercise, especially in the great outdoors. A large and sturdy stainless steel water bottle is a hiking essential. Add healthy snacks that don’t need special attention (like refrigeration) to keep you feeling great on the trail.
- Safety Gear: A strong knife is a good idea on most trails, so you can easily cut fallen branches or open a pack of food. If there are many animals in the area, the bear spray might also come in handy.
Where Can I Hike?
There are local hiking trails and beauty spots everywhere. In fact, some people even enjoy ‘urban hiking’ within city limits! However, here are some can’t-miss spectacular hiking spots in the US:
- Glacier National Reserve: Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, the alpine scenery will blow your mind
- The Wave Trail: This spectacular near-desert landscape in Arizona is full of gorgeous views and scenery that feels like a different planet
- Appalachian Trail: One of the longest hiking trails in the US, it tends to be on every dedicated hiker’s list. While you may not be able to dedicate the time to ‘thru hike’ the whole thing, there are plenty of day spots along this spectacular nature spot
- Lone Star Geyser Trail: A great addition to a trip to Yellowstone
- Grinnell Glacier Trail: Another achingly beautiful and radically different hiking landscape to explore in the Glacier National Park.
Hiking has many health benefits our bodies and minds desperately need. It’s a fun and accessible sport, so don’t feel shy to get out there and have fun!
