The Last Kingdom Season 5, Confirmed?
Here is some good news to the fans: Netflix has confirmed that The Last Kingdom will return on its fifth season. Although its release date is still tentative, fans should expect that it will be in 2021.
As the Producer at Carnival Films, Nigel Marchant stated, “We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences around the world.”, he even said that with the amount of positive responses of the last season, they are so much thrilled about bringing up season 5 on Netflix. He continued, “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his quest.”
In an interview of the main star, Alexander Dreymon (Uhtred), he said that, with the fans being so supportive on the show, it gives them the motivation to work on their best. He even stated that they don’t have advertisements going on but, somehow, their show spread due to word-of-mouth experience. He said that, “We somehow manage to survive anyway and that’s all thanks to the fans.”, he continued, “They are extremely supportive, extremely kind, and very enthusiastic. We’re all very grateful.”
The Last Kingdom Season 5 release date on Netflix
Seasons 1 up to 4 have all been aired in different intervals. So assuming that they will be released on what month of 2021 season 5 will be released is quite fallacious. The first season and second one had been released in October 2015, and March 2017, respectively.
When netflix got the show, they aired season 3 in November of 2018. A year later, they released season 4 in April of 2020. Having that thought, it would be a speculation that season 5 will be released in April 2021 having the current situation of the world.
However, there is a great chance that it will be released in mid to late 2021. Why? According to what Dreymon said in October 2020, “We’re going to start shooting towards the end of this year under very strict COVID-19 guidelines, of course”, he said, “We’re very lucky to be able to work at the moment.”
Season 5 casts, new characters?
Having a story setting in a bloody war and battles, it is common to understand that some of the characters would die and never return in the new season, and new ones will pop out. One of the characters I’m talking about is Ian Hart’s Father Beocca who took his last breath in season 4.
We can also say goodbye to the characters, Toby Regbo’s Aethelred, Cnut (Magnus Bruun) and Steapa (Adrian Bouchet). But among the characters who will leave the show, there is one person who will definitely be back. That is Alexander Dremon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
He said that, among the challenges he encounters, one of the most difficult is to keep the show interesting and keeping it alive. One of the reasons he said is playing the same character while seeing the lover’s head being cut off and thrown to you. He stated “That’s such an insane thing to wrap your head around, and yet more and more horrible things happen to Uhtred.”
However, on Eliza Butterworth’s Aelswith, there were some doubts surrounding the character. We know that Aethelhelm, the character portrayed by Adrian Schiller, poisoned her. However, speculations are still running round and round about it.
If Aelswith does come back though, she’ll surely be looking forward to a nastier and vengeful character in season 5.
For Aethelhelm, actor Adrian Schiller admitted that the character’s luck could be running out very soon and Aethelhelm might be gone for good. Although this is what he stated, a lot of people are arguing whether it might happen or not. Who knows?
Warning: Spoilers below!
What will happen in The Last Kingdom season 5? A lot of fan theories and discussions have been made throughout the internet. Although some might make sense, we do need to see the actual movie to feel it.
Anyhow, read at your own risk, spoilers are written below.
Netflix, who had released an official synopsis of the show reveals that, in the fifth season, Uhtred will realize that his destiny is not just Bebbanburg, but it is more tied down to the future of England itself. According to the synopsis, “Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son, Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”
The show will still adapt Cornwell’s Saxon Stories, so fans should expect the fifth instalment to make the Warriors of the Storm (book 9) and The Flame Bearer (book 10) to be acted out in the series. As what happens in the previous chapters, each season consists of roughly two chapters each. As what the synopsis for book 9 stated, “Uhtred of Bebbanburg … controls northern Mercia from the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are rising up against him.
And for the synopsis of book 10, The Flame Bearer: “Uhtred of Bebbanburg at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago – and which his scheming cousin still occupies. But fate is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he has sworn combine to distract him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg and Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of annihilation.”
When will the season 5 trailer come out?
Like every other season, the trailer of the season 5 will come out a month prior to the show’s premiere. So once that date will be revealed, we will have a better idea.
