In order to present a recording of a song he had written, he made a stop to a nearby radio station after finishing his duty as a Super 8 Motel’s night desk clerk. Walker’s song was played by the morning DJ despite him being informed that the station’s rules forbade playing self-submitted tapes; however, he claimed that the song was “too good to pass up.” Walker started to work at a Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company facility in 1986, the year after he received his high school diploma from Vidor, Texas. He started performing live at local bars when he was 19 and later got a job as the club singer at the Neon Armadillo, a pub in Beaumont. James Stroud, a record producer and the head of Warner Music Group subsidiary Giant Records, made him aware of him in November 1992. He went on to give a number of hits including “What’s It to You”, “Dreaming with My Eyes Open”, “Live Until I Die” and “Rumor Has It”.
