Conan Christopher O’Brien was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on April 18, 1963 to parents Thomas Frances O’Brien and Ruth O’Brien. Conan’s father, Thomas, is a physician and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, while his mother, Ruth, is a retired attorney and former partner at the Boston firm Ropes & Gray. Conan has five siblings.
During high school, Conan went to Brookline High School and was the managing editor of the school newspaper called “The Sagamore”.
During his second year in high school, Conan was an intern for Congressman Robert Drinan.
And in his senior year in high school, Conan wrote a short story entitled “To Bury the Living” and won the National Council for Teachers of English writing contest. Conan graduated in 1981 as Valedictorian.
Conan then attended Harvard University and majored in History & Literature. He stayed in Holworthy Hall in his first year and then in Mather House in his three upper-class years. His senior thesis is about the works of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor where the usage of children as symbols. Conan graduated in 1985 as magna cum laude.
In 2002, Conan married Elizabeth Ann Powel. They met way back in 2000 when she appeared in an advertising skit on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The couple dated for 18 months. They have two children. Their daughter named Neve was born in 2003 and their son named Beckett was born in 2005.
Career
Conan’s television career started when he moved to Los Angeles after graduating from Harvard. He joined the writing staff of the HBO show entitled “Not Necessarily the News”.
In January 1988, Conan joined the writing team of the Saturday Night Live (SNL) for three years. The writing team of SNL received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series in 1989.
Conan has also written the television pilot with Robert Smigel for “Lookwell” which starred Adam West. Unfortunately, the pilot was not picked up by the network. In 1991, he left SNL.
He was offered a highly-coveted opportunity writing job for the famous animated sitcom “The Simpsons”. From 1991 to 1993, Conan worked for “The Simpsons” as writer and producer. Conan has written some of the most popular episodes in The Simpsons series such as the episode entitled “Marge vs. the Monorail” and “Homer Goes to College”.
Then Conan landed the new host of the talk show “Late Night”. When David Letterman was about to depart as host of Late Night, the executive producer Lorne Michaels talked to Conan to produce the show but Conan’s agent mentioned that Conan wanted to perform. Conan was then selected as the new host of “Late Night” in April 1993 after a test audition. It premiered on September 13, 1993.

Filming at the DMZ in South Korea resulted in him stepping in North Korea technically because he stepped across the border line.
Conan’s production company called “TeamCoco” has partnered with Earwolf in 2018 for his own weekly podcast called “Conan O’Brien Needs Friend”. On November 18, 2018, Conan debuted his podcast.
The premise of the podcast is that Conan is lonely and is inviting people onto the show to be his actual friend.
