    Personal Life

    Joseph James Rogan was born on August 11, 1967, in the city of Newark, New Jersey, United States. His grandfather was the one who brought and moved the family in the US back in the 1940s.

    His parents divorced when he was at the young age of 5 years, his father ‘Joseph’, was a former police officer in the town of Newark. After his parents got divorced and at the age of 7, Joe has not been in contact with his father. His memories of his father were brief, he was not complaining about his childhood but Joe shared that his father was violent, although he mentioned that nothing really bad happened to him. 

    For 5 years, Joe and his family lived in San Francisco, California, then moved again to Gainesville, Florida, when Joe was 11 years old. Moving on, they settled in Boston, Newton Upper Falls, in Massachusetts.

    He is a descendant of one quarter of Irish and three quarter Italian, ancestry. 

    Joe had his education at Newton South High School, and graduated in 1985. During his teen-school years, he was active by participating in the Little League Baseball, after he developed an interest in martial arts. As a child, he was terrified of being called a loser and joining martial arts, gave him confidence and a different perspective of himself and an opportunity to know what he is capable of. It was not an easy start for Joe, as a child he was terrified of the sport and that was difficult for him, but when he did succeed, he really could not believe himself for making it through.  

    While taking up education at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Joe realized that it was pointless of him to continue pursuing a career course, and then decided to drop out. He continued to stay in Boston until he was 24 years old, where he then left for New York City. 

    Joe is married to Jessica Ditzel, who was a former cocktail waiter. They both have two lovely daughters namely Lola and Rosy Rogan. He was also a stepfather to Jessica’s daughter from a previous relationship. His step daughter is Kayja Connor. The family initially lived in Boulder Colorado, then moved into Bell Canyon in California. With this, the family bought a new home that is worth $5 million. In 2020, the family moved again to Lake Austin, Texas where they bought a home for $14 million US  Dollars.

    Martial Arts

    His passion in martial arts started at the early age of 14 years old when he practiced ‘Karate’, and a year after, he started practicing ‘Taekwondo’. At the age of 19 years old he had won his first tournament in the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament, as a lightweight contender. 

    He then became a full-contact state champion in the town of Massachusetts for four consecutive years. He also became a taekwondo instructor. 

    Joe practiced amateur kickboxing and held a record of 2 wins and 1 loss, but decided to retire at age 21 due to his frequent suffering of headaches and had feared that if he continued, he might sustain more damage or worse injuries.

    He became interested in the famous brazilian jiu-jitsu after seeing Royce Gracie compete at the UFC 2: No Way Out in 1994. Two years later, he started his training under Carlson Gracie in  his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Hollywood, California. 

    Comedy

    Joe in his career was never looking for an 8 hour day to day work job. At that time he was confused and uncertain about his future. Even though he did not have the intention to be a professional comedian, his fellow colleagues convinced him to try it out. 

    He performed his first stand up show at Stitches comedy club in Boston in an open mic night, in 1988. 

    It was Jeff Sussman that appreciated the comedic style of Joe and offered him to be his manager, which of course Joe agreed. His 5 min shows became a full time comedian in New York City. 

    His comedy influence came from Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce, Richard Jeni, and Sam Kinison. 

    Radio & Television

    His radio and television, started when he transferred home to Los Angeles. 

    He has worked with MTV in a comedy show, Disney network, Fox for show sitcom ‘Hardball’, The Comedy Store in Hollywood, NBC NewsRadio, and from then on gradually transitioning to his famous UFC commentating. 

    Other Jobs

    Joe has to do other jobs in order for him to support himself. He became a martial arts trainor, newspaper delivery, limousine driver, private investigator assistant, and a construction worker.

    if you are into martial arts and combat sports, then Joe is not a new face to you. You can see him in every event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the color of commentating.

    His success in the industry is notable by the awards and nominations he has received. Here are some of his accomplishments. 

    He has received nominations in Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Reality/Variety Host for Fear Factor in 2003. 

    He has won awards in World MMA Awards for Personality of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Wrestling Observer Newsletter for Best Television Announcer in 2010 and 2011.
